Painted in collaboration with HISTORY Channel for the recreation of the iconic ROOTS series. I teamed up with History to work on a mural based on identity and how our experiences help shape who we are. This mural is exploring the cultural struggles of childhood discipline and the refuge in companionship, which I believe ultimately, is passed down from your roots.
Strong discipline and hard work are still being practiced today throughout rural Dominican Republic and are embedded in me as part of my Dominican culture and a part of who I am. Looking back, I can see where I came from and see how growing up in this harsh rural environment has led me to appreciate things in life in different ways. These situations, often looked at as harsh and difficult, were often the source of character building for me. I believe enduring hardship through our lives helps us deal with future challenges.
